Study of rippability in limestone quarries-Case

of the Hadjar-Soud quarry, Algeria

     The operational effectiveness and the mechanical performance of the machines intended to work the ground and to transport the grounds depend on the preparation of the rocks to excavation. This preparation depends enormously on the rocks properties; these latter influence directly on the various technological and organizational processes.  A priori, a classification of the grounds, function of the behavior of the matter under the cutting tool or the explosive, would make it possible to establish precise estimates and indisputable situations. This is why, the objective of this approach is the rocks rippability appreciation by the combination of five properties of the rock mass in particular the material tensile strength, seismic speed, abrasiveness, the deterioration degree and the spacing of discontinuities. The suggested evaluation method is based on the evaluation of the rocks physical mechanical properties, the geotechnics and the seismic technical speed measurement in situ. It was shown through this study that these parameters are largely sufficient to describe the mechanical ripping of hard rock and of the abrasive rock masses.  Consequently, and taking into account the advantages that present the method, in particular safety, we recommend its use as soon as the conditions are favorable-As site of application, the Hadjar- Soud quarry in Algeria has been chosen.
