CATALYTIC ACTIVITY OF COBALT ORTHOBORATE

IN BUTAN-2-OL CONVERSION

Abstract

     The cobalt orthoborate was synthesized by precipitation. X-ray diffraction patterns of the samples calcined at 750C show the presence of two-phases consisting of CoB2O4 and cobalt oxide. These two phases react between them at 850C to give rise to Co3(BO3)2. The UV-visible reflectance spectrum of the product at 750C, contains beside the bands of Co2+ ions, bands ascribed to Co3+ ions arising from cobalt oxide. The spectrum of the sample prepared at 850C, shows only bands of Co2+ ions in octahedral symmetry in agreement with the structural data of Co3(BO3)2.

     Catalytic investigation of samples in butan-2-ol conversion showed that the catalysts exhibit a good activity in the dehydrogenation reaction even after a calcination at 850C.
