A VAN DER  WAALS APPROACH

Abstract


     We use a simple van der Waals theory, suitably extended to the anisotropic interactions, to study the phase behavior of a system of particles with nematic interactions. The isotropic gas-isotropic liquid, and isotropic liquid-nematic liquid first-order phase separation are investigated. We discus how the topology of the phase diagrams change upon varying the strengths of the isotropic and nematic interactions.
