Conversion of Malononitrile

into 2-Cyanomethyl Compounds

Abstract

Malononitrile is converted into 2-cyanoacetimidic acid ethyl ester hydrochloride when treated with ethanol and chlorotrimethylsilane for 17 h at 0°C. This compound is generally used in the synthesis of 2-cyanomethyl compounds.
